Front-Burner Projects

CommUnity Zone engages in a wide range of diverse projects that emphasize making connections and meeting needs in the moment and in response to day-to-day needs in the community. Examples include:

Listening Rooms

The CommUnity Zone is thrilled to be engaged with the Local Music Collective to bring a series of concerts to our space, featuring local musical artists! These concerts are planned to take place on the second Wednesday of each month, with $10 admission to support the Zone, the Collective, and the performers.

For more information about our series, including upcoming artists, visit the page and follow our social media accounts!

Lewisburg in Lights
Picture
Since 2020, the CommUnity Zone has been inspired to light up the darkness of years fraught with uncertainty and division. It’s been our goal to transform an already beautiful downtown into something truly incredible. With the support of the city and our amazing volunteers, we’ve strung lights in trees, on structures, and everywhere we could reach – and this winter, we’re doing it again! We have displays on Lewisburg’s historic lampposts and in downtown Hufnagle Park.
We also continue to work on follow-up to the Market Street Historic District Transportation and Safety Study that focused on Market Street public safety, quality of life, historic preservation, environmental sustainability, and economic viability in the Lewisburg Historic Downtown District.

For up-to-date information on all our front-burner projects and all things CommUnity Zone, please follow us on Facebook.

Ongoing Opportunities

Technology Tutoring
Our Tech Tutoring program enlists students to provide basic computer and technology training to older adults and others who may need help with a device. In return, the students develop their leadership, communication, and teaching skills. And everyone has fun!

Support for Community Groups
The Susquehanna Mediation Center, Girl Scouts in the Heart of PA, the Bucknell Institute for Lifelong Learning, The Hub for Progress, high school groups, and so many other local organizations, institutions, and individuals, too, have taken advantage of support offered to all from the CommUnity Zone.

Youth Empowerment Grant Program
Our Youth Empowerment Grant Program helps our young neighbors bring to life their visions for community improvement. Pictured here is Willow Desemeci who organized a very successful clothes drive for the poor and is a contributor to our monthly newsletter from time to time.

Community Gatherings

Picture
The CommUnity Zone, in cooperation with other community organizations and institutions, organizes events and gatherings, including:

Our Beloved Community Day,
an event organized in May or June each year to celebrate our ties to each other, as well as to inspire further commitment to volunteerism and a bold vision for a better world.

Juneteenth, a national holiday held on June 19th each year to honor the final declaration of the end of slavery in the United States.

Annual Solidarity Day:
Stop The Hate/Unity Rally, a community gathering that is part of a national effort calling for people of good will to act nonviolently as agents of healing in their communities, to speak up for the victims of hatred and intimidation, and to raise a united voice against hate-inspired violence.

Annual Hiroshima and Nagasaki Memorial Vigil, commemorating the anniversaries of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August, 1945.

And other Remembrances, gatherings organized to help the community process and heal in the wake of tragic events, such as mass shootings.

Follow us on Facebook and Instagram for the latest information on upcoming gatherings.
