Front-Burner Projects

Much of the work the CommUnity Zone does is difficult to characterize because it involves making connections and meeting needs in the moment and in response to day-to-day needs in the community. Examples include:
Lewisburg in Lights

You know that feeling you get when the downtown trees light up each year? This year we hope to expand that light – and feeling – across the community to help lift our spirits and keep downtown thriving.

We support the Black Lives Matter movement and the peaceful protests organized by If Not Us, Then Who?, a Milton-based civil rights group.

We also continue to work on follow-up to the Market Street Historic District Transportation and Safety Study that focused on Market Street public safety, quality of life, historic preservation, environmental sustainability, and economic viability in the Lewisburg Historic Downtown District.

Ongoing Opportunities

Getting Ahead in the Valley: A Bridges Out of Poverty Program
One of our most ambitious programs to date, Getting Ahead works to move people out of poverty and into sustainable lives.

Support for Community Groups
The Susquehanna Mediation Center, Girl Scouts in the Heart of PA, the Bucknell Institute for Lifelong Learning, The Hub for Progress, high school groups, and so many other local organizations, institutions, and individuals, too, have taken advantage of support offered to all from the CommUnity Zone.

Youth Empowerment Grant Program
Our Youth Empowerment Grant Program helps our young neighbors bring to life their visions for community improvement.

The Susquehanna Valley TimeBank
The Susquehanna Valley TimeBank is a network of community  members who exchange services with others in the group―for free! For each hour a member spends providing a service, an hour is “banked” in their account. The member can use this hour of credit later to access a service provided by any other member, not just the member they worked for. In other words, each hour of service provided is logged and becomes the unit of “currency” that “purchases” other services.

Community Gatherings

Picture
The CommUnity Zone, in cooperation with other community organizations and institutions, organizes events and gatherings, including:

Our Beloved Community Day,
an event organized in May or June each year to celebrate our ties to each other, as well as to inspire further commitment to volunteerism and a bold vision for a better world.

Annual Solidarity Day:
Stop The Hate/Unity Rally, a community gathering that is part of a national effort calling for people of good will to act nonviolently as agents of healing in their communities, to speak up for the victims of hatred and intimidation, and to raise a united voice against hate-inspired violence.

Annual Hiroshima and Nagasaki Memorial Vigil, commemorating the anniversaries of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August, 1945.

And other Remembrances, gatherings organized to help the community process and heal in the wake of tragic events, such as mass shootings.

Follow us on Facebook and Instagram for the latest information on upcoming gatherings.

How-to Help

Picture
Technology Tutoring
Our Tech Tutoring program enlists students to provide basic computer and technology training to older adults and others who may need help with a device. In return, the students develop their leadership, communication, and teaching skills. And everyone has fun!
