Tiny Home Project

The Tiny Home Alternative for Accessible Living
As a community planner who has worked in the field of aging for over 45 years, I wish to creatively address the unmet need for accessible housing for people with disabilities or special needs. Our small team is currently exploring the idea of using accessible tiny houses located in supportive environments as a possible alternative housing solution.

The Challenge:
Consider how your life - and housing needs - could change with disease, illness, a car accident, aging, a work injury, paralysis, a military service injury, a sports injury, a fall. Many people reach a point in their lives where physical limitations can cause them to need a safe, accessible environment and help with tasks like meal preparation, bathing, medication management, shopping, etc. Desirable housing options are limited, regardless of income level.

The Vision for a New Option:
One possibility is to use an emerging new model - tiny homes that are designed to be accessible and flexible enough to be moved or removed when no longer needed. This unit could be attached to an existing home or be freestanding.
We see this option as an opportunity and challenge that requires expertise from a variety of fields and groups, including potential consumers, construction, engineering, design, local government, regulatory agencies, home health community, veterans advocates, disability communities, economic development experts, agencies on aging, and more.
